As the weather heats up, enjoy the tastes of summer. Zucchini flowers, sweet english peas, strawberries and blueberries—all at their best at Harvest Wagon.
Edible flowers...
Zucchini Flowers are a special summer treat. Gaining in popularity in North America, Italians have been enjoying these delectable, edible blossoms for years. There are male and female versions. The male is more delicate, with a thinner stem. The female is usually larger and has a sweeter stem. Highly perishable, consume them within a day of purchase. A great source of folic acid, try them pan fried, deep fried, stuffed, in pastas, or in salads. Get them in June, July and August.
Peas in a pod...
Sweet english peas are a delicious taste treat. Eat them raw, out of the pod, and in salads. Consume as soon as possible, or refrigerate immediately. The natural sugar deteriorates quickly, so don’t shell or wash them until ready to use. Low in calories, they are a good source of potassium, calcium, iron, and vitamins A, B, and C. They peak in June and July.
Ontario berries...
A favourite summer treat, enjoy strawberries, golden and black raspberries. Store in the fridge in layers, separated by paper towels, inside a plastic container or sealed bag. Ontario strawberries and raspberries peak in June and July.
Super berries...
Called a superfood, blueberries top the charts as one of the richest sources of antioxidants. Studies show that blueberries not only halt the aging process but actually reverse it. They have also been proven to improve short term memory loss, and balance and co-ordination. All this and delicious, too! Wild Ontario blueberries are available in July, and peak in August.
