Autumn harvest vegetables and fruits at Harvest Wagon

Summer may be over, but some tastes of the season will be with us for a few more weeks. Enjoy sweet corn, concord grapes and field tomatoes at their peak into October. With the change of season, enjoy fall’s delicious flavours, including Barlett, Anjou and Bosc Pears.

Corn on the cob
Anyway you cook it, corn on the cob is a favourite treat. Sweet corn is best in August and into early fall, and remains available into October. Leave fresh corn in the husk and refrigerate as soon as possible. Enjoy within a few days. Buying it road-side may be a summer tradition, but high temperatures often cause it to lose its sweetness.

Barlett, Anjou & Bosc Pears
Barlett pears peak in September, and remain available into early fall. They bruise easily and are highly perishable. Anjou and Bosc pears both peak in early fall and into November, and remain available for most of the year. Anjou pears firmness means they can take up to two weeks to ripen. Bosc pears are juicy and sweet, with a brown skin that ripens to golden russet. Both are good for cooking.

Concord Grapes
These blue beauties peak in September and October, and will keep for a week in the fridge, loosely wrapped in a single layer. Wash just before serving and enjoy them on their own, or as part of a fruit and cheese platter.

Field of Tomatoes
Field tomatoes peak in late summer/early fall, and remain available through October. They are best stored at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. They should only be refrigerated in extreme heat or if overly ripe.

This fall, also enjoy Harvest Wagon’s large selection of Ontario grown apples, potted ornamental kales, flowering cabbages and chrysanthemums, and pumpkins, squashes and root vegetables.
