The Prince Edward: Then and Now

Understanding what the markets indicate about the future of condominium living here in Toronto, I recently had the pleasure of meeting an Etobicoke condominium resident who had an interesting story. Susanne Wilson (nee McLelland) explained how it was, then and now, at the Prince Edward.
Susanne, at age five, moved into a building above a bank in an area called Lambton Mills. Her grandfather, Stanley Wowk, said, “It’s worth the sacrifice.” Mom and Dad remarked, “It needs plenty of work!”
The main floor of the two storey building had previously been the Molson Bank of Canada. Though the building needed much work, the family moved in 1949. Susanne noted that in 1966, when Dundas street was widened, the base of the house was moved and revealed the millstone base of the original exterior construction. Also, there was a vegetable garden and flowers everywhere, marking the large parcel of land backing onto the Humber River. Things have certainly changed.
“Mom said that this would be her retirement.” It was indeed. “She enjoyed her time in it and it was a good investment.”
Susanne’s mom, Jeanette McLelland, didn’t take the first offer from the condominium builder but a deal was finally struck. The original house could not be saved, but her memories are right where they began—in Susanne’s condominium space.
Susanne now lives in her mom’s condo at 4196 Dundas St. West, where she says her mom is at peace and “I am back home.” Don, her husband, enjoys the walks around the lush neighbourhood and is completely content in their space.
